Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has announced a ban on first-class
travel for government officials as part of efforts to reduce public spending.
Speaking at a ministerial swearing-in ceremony on February 7, 2025, he
emphasized the need for modesty in government operations and strict
accountability in the use of state resources. Ministers must now seek prior
approval from the Chief of Staff for any official travel.
President Mahama reiterated that government resources belong to the people and
must not be wasted on luxury. He pledged to hold officials accountable and
ensure that public funds are used solely to improve citizens' livelihoods. He also
acknowledged Ghana’s economic difficulties and vowed to take decisive action,
including reviewing the findings of the Operation Recover All the Loot
(ORAL) committee to reclaim misappropriated public funds.
