The Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has formally denied any involvement in the abduction of 75-year-old Austrian humanitarian Eva Gretzmacher, who was kidnapped on Saturday, January 11, 2025, in the Agadez region of Niger. The group categorically rejected the accusations, stating it had no link to the act, which it referred to as “false.” This position was officially released  in a statement by its media branch, the “Az-Zallaqa Foundation.” Eva Gretzmacher, who had been living in Agadez for nearly 30 years and founded the charitable organization "Amanay," was abducted amid increasing insecurity in the Sahel region, where armed groups, including jihadists, have been intensifying their activities. Her disappearance prompted a significant mobilization of local security forces and led to increased security measures in Agadez. Nigerien authorities continue their intensified search in this strategic area, but as of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. The authorities in the Agadez region have committed to protecting the local population and humanitarian workers while intensifying efforts against armed groups operating in the area. This incident highlights the persistent security challenges faced by Niger and its neighbors, particularly in the fight against terrorism and criminal groups operating in the region. The Nigerien government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen security and protect its citizens and humanitarian workers in the region.

Nigeria’s Zamfara State during a military airstrike targeting criminal gangs. The attack occurred in Zurmi and Maradun areas, and while the military claimed the operation successfully neutralized bandits and rescued kidnap victims, reports suggest the victims were mistaken for criminals. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) acknowledged the incident and expressed concern over the loss of civilian lives, promising a thorough investigation. Amnesty International Nigeria reported 20 fatalities, called the use of air raids reckless, and demanded an impartial investigation.
